Doing UX Alone – The Hidden Challenges and Advantages of Being a Solo Practitioner

Palace I

Many UX professionals work without the support of large research or design teams. They are the sole UX researcher, lone designer, fractional consultant, internal advocate, or independent practitioner responsible for everything from stakeholder alignment and user research to strategy, facilitation, and delivery.

While discussions about UX often focus on mature organizations with established teams, the reality for many practitioners is far more independent — and far more complex.

This panel brings together experienced solo practitioners and UX leaders to discuss the realities of practicing UX as a “team of one.” Panelists will share lessons learned about prioritization, influence, business development, client management, AI-assisted workflows, burnout prevention, and maintaining research rigor without extensive resources or organizational support.

Topics will include:
– How solo practitioners create impact without large teams
– Strategies for scaling themselves effectively
– Managing stakeholder expectations and organizational politics
– Building credibility and influence as a lone UX voice
– Using AI and operational tools to reduce overhead
– Pricing, positioning, and sustaining an independent practice
– Avoiding burnout while wearing multiple hats

The session will provide practical, honest insight for UX professionals working independently inside organizations or as consultants and freelancers. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for making solo UX work more sustainable, influential, and rewarding.
